Vitalis: RealWear Navigator 500

Vitalis: RealWear Navigator 500

Vitalis is an elderly care organization in the Netherlands that operates 20 locations in Eindhoven. It provides extensive care services both to nursing home residents and to people who prefer to live at home. Offering a wide spectrum of care options, Vitalis provides services ranging from basic assistance to specialized treatments such as physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The challenge

Under the current approach to guiding and training students, each student is accompanied by a supervisor and they perform tasks together. To make this process more time-efficient and improve students' learning outcomes, Vitalis wanted to introduce smart glasses into the process. That way, students could perform tasks independently while still being supervised through the smart glasses. In addition, the supervisor would not need to be physically present and could provide assistance from the office.

The main priority when choosing smart glasses was the ability to use Microsoft Teams, since this software is already in use throughout Vitalis. This would allow the smart glasses to be integrated into their process quickly and easily. It was also important that the smart glasses be comfortable to wear and easy to use hands-free.

The solution

VR Expert provided Vitalis with information on which smart glasses were already being used by other elderly care organizations and which smart glasses support Microsoft Teams. With VR Expert's help, Vitalis decided to work with the RealWear Navigator 500.

Vitalis chose the RealWear Navigator 500 because the headset is very comfortable to wear. They were particularly impressed by the hands-free functionality enabled by voice commands and by the convenience of being able to flip the display up when it is not in use. Moreover, the RealWear Navigator 500 meets Vitalis's main criterion, as it supports Microsoft Teams.

During the testing phase, from March through the end of June, the RealWear Navigator 500 was trialed at one location with positive results. It was used successfully by one student and one supervisor, demonstrating its potential benefits. The next phase of implementation is planned for September/October at the same location, where the RealWear will be used with multiple students and supervisors. This will be a significant step forward in introducing the technology at Vitalis. Once implemented, the RealWear Navigator 500 will greatly enhance the learning experience and make the process more time-efficient. Supervisors can provide remote guidance, offering a flexible and efficient approach to student learning.

“VR Expert helped us find the right smart glasses for our specific use case with the RealWear Navigator 500. By implementing it into our process, the learning experience for students improved significantly, which led to students becoming more independent.”
